Implementing cloud MES at a cell therapy leader in less than 6 months during COVID-19

In a record time of just six months, Werum PAS-X as a Service went live at one of the UK-based biopharmaceutical startups developing T cell therapies designed to recognize and eradicate cancer cells. Due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the software experts of Körber Business Area Pharma executed most of the implementation project completely remotely.

With their first T-cell products in clinical trial, production capacities at the biotech startup’s facility required a digitized and scalable solution to increase efficiency and produce more batches.

“Introducing cloud-based Electronic Batch Recording was a big success. All project milestones were completed with high quality and in a timely manner – notwithstanding the COVID-19 shutdown, which has led to significant restrictions,” says a senior manager of the customer.

T cell manufacturing in the biotech facility is scheduled to run 16h/7d with up to 20 concurrent users in the production system. Werum PAS-X as a Service covers core MES functionality and integration into the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud. Körber complemented the standard offering by delivering additional services such as end user training, validation as a service, and MBR Design – essential to augmenting the customer’s users and delivering on time.

“What ultimately led the UK-based startup to collaborate with us was a combination of meeting their user requirements, our proven record of accomplishment with similarly positioned cell therapy companies, and our commitment to supporting the customer with our product roadmap into the future,” says Ryan Hamilton, Manager Sales & Business Consulting Software, Körber Business Area Pharma.

“Our job is to provide Pharma 4.0 solutions that help our pharma and biotech customers to be successful in a world that is impacted by the speed of change, and mobile and cloud technologies. As pharma software experts, we offer our customers a unique value proposition for a holistic solution from a single source, comprising state-of-the-art manufacturing software, hardware and the appropriate services for the digital pharma factory of the future”, says Teerapong Cheepchol, President Software Asia, Körber Business Area Pharma.

With Werum PAS-X as a Service, Körber’s software experts have brought their market-leading MES for pharma, biotech and cell & gene into the cloud. Production IT and infrastructure are set up and managed by Körber making it a full Software as a Service offering. This allows many companies to focus on their core business – manufacturing vital, life-saving cellular therapy products.
